Have you met Cincinnati’s newest icon? The Jurassic period has invaded Rhinegeist Brewery since the arrival of Galeamopus, a rare, nearly complete dinosaur. Galeamopus is the newest addition to Cincinnati Museum Center’s growing collection of mounted dinosaur skeletons and the centerpiece of its forthcoming dinosaur gallery, Dinosaur Discoveries. Join Cincinnati Museum Center’s Associate Vice President for Science and Research and Withrow Farny Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology, Dr. Glenn Storrs, to hear how 18 years of work resulted in the collection, conservation and preparation of a one-of-its-kind skeleton for scientific analysis and museum exhibition.
The 50-foot-long sauropod skeleton was discovered in Montana. Federal public lands serve as a vast outdoor laboratory for paleontological resources, and it is up to federal land managers to track and distribute scientifically and economically valuable fossils. Federal land managers conduct inventories, carefully collect fossils and place fossils in publicly accessible museums where they can be studied and enjoyed by everyone. From the Bureau of Land Management, paleontologist Greg Liggett will provide insight into the history and legal background of fossil management.
Finally, discover the science of beer. Galeamopus inspired Rhinegeist’s new beer, Brittlebrain, an effervescent, fruity and slightly spicy Belgian Style Golden Ale. Beyond an art, Rhinegeist Brewery’s Chief Science Officer, Jim Matt, will discuss Brittlebrain and the interplay of science with brewing.
Like every Jurassic Park movie, Galeamopus is going to break out of its cage soon. It will be installed in Dinosaur Discoveries in time for Union Terminal’s November reopening. Toast it one last time at Rhinegeist with Cincinnati Museum Center.
In collaboration with Rhinegeist Brewery.
